Background of Countee Cullen
Countee never knew who his real parent were because his mom, dad, and brother were lost, so it is not for sure but it's believed that Countee was raised by his paternal grandmother. His grandmother died when he was in his teens and he was then taken in by Carolyn Belle and Reverend Frederick A. Cullen. In high school he edited the school newspaper and literary magazine. He went to New York University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Harvard University with his masters in 1926. His influence in poetry John Keats. In 1928 he married Yolande Du Bois and divorced in 1930. That year he started teaching in a junior high school as french teacher. He was a child author and play writer. Countee has many legacies left behind like having publie schools named after him. |
